A Cat's Dream

6/7/2020

Picture“D.C. Cat” is on page 131 of Amazing Holiday Paws.

Amazing Holiday Paws
has a poem about a cat's dream: "Political Scratches from D.C.'s Dreaming Cat on National Cat Day (October 29)." D.C. Cat is the cat's name. In its dream, D.C. Cat interacts with people who are initially standing on a round table and smelling for rats. This is obviously the cat's view of a person because people don't normally stand on tables. Also, when people's faces are moving around, they are normally looking at things, rather than smelling things. Cats more often focus on smelling items.
The "smelling for rats" idea is obviously intended to be symbolic of political rats. Yes, in our reality, we do have political rats. We also have many political angels, like D.C. Cat. I wonder if D.C. Cat will receive any votes in November 2020.

A Dream with My Cats at Disney World

Earlier this year, before Walt Disney World closed, I was able to visit it for the first time in my life. Last night, I had an interesting dream about the experience. I was waiting in line for one of the rides at the Animal Kingdom. My cats were waiting in line with me. They weren’t even on leashes or in cat carriers, and they wanted to jump up onto the ride. Before we were at the front of the line, fireworks started to display in the sky above the ride. Then one of my cats woke me up, so the ending of my dream was the reality of a cat demanding that I wake up, rather than being with three scaredy cats on a roller coaster.

Traffic Dream

Because I encounter traffic on the roads a lot in my reality, I often have dreams about traffic and other driving problems. A few days ago, I had a dream about going to New York City. I was going to take a plane and then changed my mind because I wanted to drive my car around New York City. I then drove my car to New York City and was so happy when I encountered very little traffic there. Possibly the reason for so little traffic was the timing: about two o'clock in the morning. In my dream, all of the stores were actually open then, and the sun was shining. The roads were also all painted like the example in this blog's picture. Rather than a nightmare of traffic, I had a very positive dream about having fun on a trip.

Dream and Reality Connections to Eggs

In my reality at the grocery store last week, I checked the eggs that I was buying to make certain all of them were okay. They were. I then went to one of the checkout registers. The store's cashier also checked out the eggs to make certain they were all okay. They were still all perfect.

In a dream that same night, I was at the same grocery store again. I was trying to buy eggs. Each time when I opened up the top of an egg carton, I immediately saw that all of the eggs were cracked. I then gave up and decided not to buy any eggs.

I think I was trying to tell myself that I didn't have to be perfect and that life often includes some broken parts.

A Dream about an Author Event

PictureDr. Karen Petit at the Fifth Annual Rhode Island Authors Expo, Dec. 2, 2017, at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet
Because I love to participate in many author events, I often have dreams about these events. I recently had a dream about being one of the authors in a multi-author library event. When I arrived at the library, I was shocked to see everyone setting up outdoor canopy tents in one of the library's large rooms. I drove home quickly, put a tent in my car, and went back to the library. Library employees and other authors helped me to set up my tent inside the library.
The helpfulness of the people in my dream was similar to what always happens in my reality at author, vendor, and other events. My family, friends, and even strangers are always very helpful.
The photo in this blog post is obviously a photo taken at a real author event of mine, rather than during a dream.

A Fictional Dream Becoming a Reality

Parts of my real dreams are often incorporated into my fictional novels and poetry. On March 14, 2019, the opposite happened. One of my fictional dreams became my reality. A
dream chapter in Roger Williams in an Elevator is titled "Roger Williams in an Elevator." In this chapter, the protagonist meets a Roger Williams statue in her dream. When I did a presentation about Roger Williams on March 14 at the Pawtucket Public Library, I was able to visit a Roger Williams statue that was temporarily at the library. While the statue in the library was different from the Prospect Terrace Park statue met by the protagonist in Roger Williams in an Elevator, I loved being able to live a reality that was referenced in one of the dreams of one of my novels.

Dream about Shopping

Whenever I have an interesting dream, wake up, and think I might want to use the content in my writing, I quickly write down whatever I can remember. The picture here shows an example of how I scribble on paper what happened, so I'll have the content. While I don't always use the content directly, sometimes what I might be trying to say to myself will give me ideas for my writing. For example, in the dream content referenced in this picture, I'm shopping with my kids, and we see some electronic toys, which actually weren't being made when my kids were kids. This dream just happened a few weeks ago, and the toys in my dream were not available for purchase over forty years ago. Perhaps the content about the store person telling us we couldn't buy those toys happened because the time frame was incorrect, or possibly I was trying to tell myself that I'm still young--or maybe that I'm getting old.

A Dream about Winter Being Cold

Last week, I had a dream about making plans to go Christmas shopping with one of my relatives. While standing near an outdoor Christmas tree, I started typing a message into my phone about what store I could meet at. Suddenly, I thought that one of my cats was waking me up, but I was still dreaming. Instead of a regular phone's touch screen, I was typing in letters via little buttons made of rubber. I kept on typing in the wrong letters. The small rubber push buttons were like the remote control for one of my air conditioners. My fingers actually felt cold. I finally really woke up. I think I was trying to tell myself that I was doing things wrong: it was too cold outside to be typing in cell-phone messages without wearing any gloves.

Dancing with Cats in a Dream

About a week ago, I had a really nice lucid dream. I was dancing with my cats. The music was their purring noises, so it was like they were singing with purrs.
I was as small as they were, but I still seemed to be shaped like a person, rather than like a cat. I suddenly realized how large the room was and knew that the room was too large. Even though I was still in the dream and dancing with my cats, I realized that I was dreaming. After another five or ten seconds of dancing to the sounds of purrs, I woke up.
While I often do not lucid dream, occasionally something nice like this one does happen.

Dreaming about Money

In the last week, I've had two dreams about money. The dream last night was about creating a chart that listed the prices of my books for an upcoming author event. Unlike the prices on the chart that I normally use at my author events, the dream chart had imaginary prices listed for each book. The cheapest price was over eight hundred dollars for electronic download versions. Mayflower Dreams was priced at over a thousand dollars.
In reality, I charge even less at author events than the prices that are listed online: http://www.drkarenpetit.com/purchase.html. The reason for last night's dream may have been the really unusual prices that are occasionally listed online. The picture in this blog post shows what was being charged for Banking on Dreams in September 2017: $997.09. The current prices listed today on amazon.com for Banking on Dreams range between $3.99 and $31.44 (plus shipping).
Another reason for this dream may have been a different dream that I had last weekend. I was shopping with my kids when they were young, and we went to a place in the store where a layaway booth was located. The booth was in a tiny closet with an ancient cash register. I tried to buy a cell phone and asked my kids if I could pay for the phone by using the phone for the purchase. This dream was interesting because it showed my lack of money, as well as how my kids were helping me. It also showed a connection between my past (when items were paid for by layaway payments) and my present (when more technology is available).
Having two money dreams within a week is interesting, especially since one showed things being expensive, and the other one showed items being purchased more cheaply via a layaway plan.
